With the recent hot weather we need to keep in mind our pets are not just part of our family, they are a part of the family we can take travelling with us.  Camping and vacationing is lots of fun when the dogs (and even the occasional cats!) come with us.  We must remember that for short errands to the store, bank etc. where the animal may be unattended in a vehicle we should leave them at home.  In only 10 minutes the temperature inside a parked car can go up 10 degrees celsius, even in the shade.  This is enough to cause dehydration, heat stroke and even death.  Leaving the windows cracked  is not enough.  Dogs and cats do not sweat, they pant, to thermoregulate and this only makes the temperature rise faster.  Police and Bylaw Control Officers will break your window to rescue a distressed pet, and there are significant fines for causing such distress.  If you would not leave your baby in the car, don't leave your animal.  They cannot remove their fur coat, and they cannot call for help once they are in distress.  Some pets do not recover from heat stroke without serious long term disabilities and some will die.  Leaving the pet at home with adequate shade and plenty of water are the safest options.  Please have a safe and fun summer season.
